Wild Cards 7, co-authored by George R. R. Martin and John J. Miller, stands out as one of the top entries in the Wild Cards series. Despite not typically being a fan of mosaic novels, I found this book to be a prime example of how it should be executed. The collaboration between only two writers undoubtedly aids in maintaining a strong pace throughout the story. Additionally, the fact that half of the book is written by my favorite author, George R. R. Martin, speaks volumes. ‘Dead Man’s Hand’ serves as a parallel novel to the previous installment, ‘Ace in the Hole,’ delving into a storyline teased in WC6 involving Chrysalis’s murder. The characters of Jay ‘Popinjay’ Acroyd and ‘Yeoman’ Brennan are compelling, with Popinjay emerging as a classic Martin hero with hidden depths. While I missed the Turtle’s presence, Jay’s character offered a suitable replacement. However, Yeoman’s new romantic subplot was less engaging compared to his past dynamics. The mystery aspect of the novel is well done, keeping readers guessing until the end. The focus on Jokers, rather than just Aces, was a refreshing change and added depth to the narrative. ‘Dead Man’s Hand’ delivers a thrilling experience packed with action, adventure, and a powerful climax that brings multiple characters together. This novel stands out as one of the strongest entries in the Wild Cards series, rivaling the best of the franchise so far.

Dead Man’s Hand is a gripping story that unfolds during the 1988 Democratic National Convention, coinciding with the events of Ace In the Hole. Following the murder of Chrysalis, a unique joker with invisible skin who was also a club owner and information broker, her former lover Yeoman and the teleportation-powered private investigator Jay ‘Popinjay’ Ackroyd embark on a thrilling journey to uncover the killer. The narrative is a thrilling rollercoaster of twists and turns that culminates in the revelation of the murderer.
